Propagation Guide

Rooting and Transplanting Fig Cuttings

A comprehensive guide to propagating fig trees from cuttings. Figs root easily with minimal supplies โ€” great for beginner propagators.

Rooting fig cuttings is one of the most rewarding and accessible forms of plant propagation. Figs are forgiving and vigorous โ€” a single dormant cutting can become a producing tree within 2โ€“3 years. This guide walks you through each step with practical tips from our experience in the Inland Empire.

Before you begin, collect everything you'll need:

  • Fig cuttings (dormant hardwood cuttings, ideally pencil-thick)
  • Sharp, clean pruning shears or a knife
  • Rooting hormone (optional but helpful)
  • Small pots or containers with drainage holes
  • Potting mix (see Step 6 for options)
  • A plastic bag or humidity dome
  • Labels and a marker
  • Water

The best time to take fig cuttings is during dormancy โ€” late fall through early spring, before new growth begins. In the Inland Empire that's typically December through February.
